This article is an excerpt of a larger report and gives the current status of the code calculations that have been done to investigate the fatigue life time of a tee. The tee under investigation failed under high cyclic loading.
The conclusion with the code calculations is that
- the tee is strong enough for the maximum (static) internal pressure
- the code calculations give an indication whether fatigue failure due to cyclic loading is to be expected but seem not (yet) to be suitable to predict the life time of the tee under the specified cyclic pressure loading.

The purpose is to illustrate that the beta (β) in EN 13480-3 formula 6.4.6-1 and 6.4.7-1 can become negative and leads to invalid results.
Most calculators and software will probably disregard the invalid result, but it could be improved in the EN 13480-3 to prevent misunderstanding.

We are happy to announce that the B12 software application with the ASME B31.12 design calculation is released. The growing interest in processing and production of Hydrogen resulted in many requests to Red-Bag to develop the calculation code software.

Introduction
This document provides the rationale (arguments) for the definition of the limit calculations as used in document ‘EN 10253-2 vs EN 13480-3 Tee limit definition Type B DN800xDN500 S4 rev.1’ of August 18, 2023.

Introduction
The intention of the Tee area figures is to provide a calculation method and understanding which allows to make calculations for standard EN 10253, ASME B16.9 and custom Tees. The area figures are supposed to be close to the EN 10253 dimensions as possible. It is not the intention to validate the EN 10253 approach. However we provide feedback on the statements made in above emails

Summary
The purpose of this document is to propose a piping tee dimension definition for standard tee- and custom designed tee calculation in EN 13480-3.
The previous proposal with a straight-line distance definition for the limits, from the run side and branch side, resulted in significant differences with the EN 10253-2/4 approach. The limits are the lines that define borders of the pressure area and the material area in the calculation in Clause 8.

Introduction
The EN 13480-3 scope is specified as ‘the design and calculation of industrial metallic piping systems, including supports. The design criteria, as laid out in clause 4, include the internal and/or external pressure amongst others

The dimensions standard EN 10253-2 (and also EN 10253-4) have further detailed the calculations of EN 13480-3. The EN 10253-2 calculations are based on the EN 13480-3 but tailored to the EN 10253-2 fittings. The fitting types are elbow, tee, reducer and cap. The calculations are now part of our E80 application.

There are cases with manhole blind flanges where the number of bolts are not enough for a proper leak tight connection with the flange at the storage tank side. The blind flange takes the shape as an ‘umbrella’ around the bolts.
